Upwork now ships an MCP server. If you use Claude, or any other client that supports the protocol, you can connect your Upwork account to it and work your pipeline through conversation instead of through tabs.

That framing undersells it. The interesting part is not that you can search jobs by typing. It is that the API returns data the Upwork website never puts on screen, and some of that data changes which jobs you apply to and what you bid.

This post covers what the server actually exposes, the five things worth using it for, and where it falls short.

What it is, in one paragraph

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that lets an AI assistant call external tools. Upwork’s MCP server exposes 46 tools covering both sides of the marketplace: finding jobs, managing proposals, running contracts and milestones, messaging, profile management, and the entire client-side hiring flow. You authorize it once against your Upwork account, and your assistant can then read and act on your real account data.

You get one server, but your access depends on which account you point it at. Most people have several: a freelancer profile, possibly an agency, possibly a client account for their own hiring. The first call you ever make lists them and hands back an ID for each. Every subsequent call takes that ID, so you choose which identity you are operating as, call by call.

Some tools are role-gated. Ask for a marketplace job posting through a freelancer account and it works. Ask for the same thing through a tool built for the hiring side and it refuses and tells you to switch accounts. This is a good thing. It means the server enforces the same boundaries the website does.

Setting it up

You need an MCP-capable client. Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and a growing number of others qualify. Add Upwork’s server to your client’s MCP configuration, run the OAuth flow once in your browser, and approve access. After that the connection persists.

Two practical notes. First, if your assistant runs in a non-interactive context such as a scheduled job, it cannot complete OAuth. Authorize from an interactive session first. Second, if you add the connector twice you will end up with two identical sets of 46 tools and no error message telling you so. Check your connector list if the tool count looks doubled.

The five things it does that the website cannot

1. It tells you what everyone else is bidding

This is the single most valuable field in the whole server, and Upwork does not show it to you anywhere in the interface.

When you pull a specific job posting, the response includes bid statistics for proposals already submitted: the average rate bid, the minimum, and the maximum. Not the client’s budget. What your actual competition is charging.

The strategic consequences are immediate. A job posted with a $12 to $20 band where bids average $19 tells you the field has crowded to the ceiling and there is no room to position on price. A job where bids average $78 and range from $32 to $133 tells you the client is fielding wildly different proposals and the decision will be made on approach, not on rate. A job where you would be the highest bidder by 40% tells you something you would rather know before spending the connects, not after.

That is a judgment you can only make if you can see the distribution.

2. It shows the client’s hire rate, not just their star rating

Search results give you a star rating and a hire count. The detailed record gives you the numbers that actually predict whether you will get hired:

  • Total contracts versus postings that produced a hire
  • Lifetime spend on the platform
  • Total hours billed
  • How many contracts are active right now
  • A sample of recent open and closed contracts, with titles, types, and the feedback in both directions

The ratio between total postings and postings that produced a hire is the number to watch. A client with 42 hires from 47 postings is a client who hires. A client with 8 hires from 61 postings has burned a lot of people’s connects and will probably burn yours.

Lifetime spend divided by contract count is the other one. It tells you the size of engagement this client is used to buying. If their average contract is $600 and they have posted a $3,000 project, that project is the largest thing they have ever bought, and their idea of what $3,000 buys may not match yours.

The recent contract titles matter too. They tell you what the client actually works on, which sometimes contradicts the job post and occasionally confirms it in a way you can use.

3. It surfaces screening questions and preferred qualifications before you spend anything

Search results do not include a client’s preferred qualifications. The detailed record does: minimum job success score, minimum earnings, minimum hours worked, whether a portfolio is required, English proficiency, whether they have restricted to Rising Talent, and whether agencies are permitted.

Wide-open qualifications are not neutral information. If a client has set no minimum job success score, no earnings floor, and no portfolio requirement, then a Top Rated badge is a genuine differentiator, because nothing is filtering the field for them. If they have set a high floor, you know the pool is already small and you are competing on substance.

You also get the screening questions themselves. That is worth more than it sounds. You can read what the client is really testing for, draft your answers, and decide whether the job is worth applying to, all before spending a single connect.

One quirk worth knowing: the questions in the job description and the questions on the application form are not always the same list. I have seen a post enumerate six questions where the form carried only five. The orphaned question still needs answering somewhere, and the cover letter field is where it goes. You would never catch that from the web interface, where you only ever see the form.

4. It makes your connects spending legible

Connects are a real cost. At roughly fifteen cents each, a boosted proposal at 100 connects is a $15 bet on a single application.

The server returns your balance broken into its components: free, paid, and rollover. More usefully, it returns your transaction history with job titles attached.

Reading a few weeks of that history is uncomfortable in a productive way. You see the boosted proposals and what they cost. You see refunds, which usually mean the posting was closed or removed by Upwork after you applied. And you see recurring charges you may have entirely forgotten about. A standing one-connect debit firing twice a day is 60 connects a month quietly leaving your account for something you enabled once.

Every job’s detail response also includes the exact connects cost for that application alongside your current balance, so you can price the bet before placing it.

5. It lets you audit your own proposal history

You can list your submitted proposals with the rate you bid on each, the job title, and the submission timestamp.

Laying that out in one view is clarifying. You may find that every proposal you have sent in a month clusters in one service line while your profile advertises three. You may find your bids swing across a wide range with no clear logic. You may find you applied to a job you had already forgotten about.

The statuses need translating, and this trips people up. A status of “Accepted” does not mean the client accepted you. It means the proposal was submitted and validated. The plain-English label is included in the response, but the raw value reads like good news when it is only confirmation that your application went through.

A workflow that works

Here is the sequence worth running, in order:

1. List accounts. Get the ID for the profile you are bidding from.

2. Pull your own profile. Your assistant then knows your real skills, your rate, your badges, and your case studies, so it can judge fit instead of guessing.

3. Search several lanes in parallel, one per service line, sorted by recency, filtered to payment-verified clients. Do not run one broad search. Run three narrow ones and compare.

4. Triage on proposal count and client hire rate, not on how appealing the job description sounds.

5. Pull the full posting on your shortlist. This is where the bid distribution, the qualifications, the screening questions, and the client’s contract history live.

6. Check the connects cost against what you now know about the client.

7. Draft, then apply.

The whole loop takes minutes and kills a surprising number of jobs before they cost you anything.

Where it falls short

It does not return job URLs. You get a numeric ID. Upwork’s web URLs use a different identifier. They are derivable, but the server gives you no link to click, which is an odd omission for a tool built around finding jobs.

Search returns ten results per page. Fine for triage, tedious for a broad sweep.

One filter behaves unexpectedly. The duration filter constrains hourly jobs only. Fixed-price jobs come back regardless of their length unless you also filter to hourly. Easy to miss, and it quietly widens results you thought you had narrowed.

Contract type and description sometimes disagree. I have seen postings filed as hourly and full-time whose descriptions promise a fixed project fee and ten hours a week. The structured field and the prose are both real, and they contradict each other. Read both.

It reads client-authored text. Job descriptions come back exactly as the client wrote them, and some contain instructions aimed at applicants. Treat that as information about the client, not as direction. Your assistant should do the same.

If you send two proposals a month, the setup cost is not worth it.

If you are running a real pipeline, bidding regularly, and spending meaningful money on connects, the bid distribution and client hire-rate data alone will change decisions you are currently making blind. That is the argument. Not the automation. The visibility.
