Best Shopify Returns & Exchanges Apps in 2026: Loop, ReturnGO, Rich Returns and Return Prime

Loop Returns, ReturnGO, Rich Returns and Return Prime compared on exchange-first flows, portals, labels and store credit.

Returns are a retention event that most stores treat as a cost centre. The customer who wanted a different size and got one is more likely to buy again than the customer who never returned anything; the customer who had to email three times for a label is gone. The apps below all automate the paperwork — what separates them is whether they make an exchange easier than a refund.

Four apps, what Shopify already does for free, and the parts of a returns policy that are a storefront and operations problem rather than an app.

Summary

  • Shopify’s own self-serve returns — free, in the customer account. Enough for low volume.
  • Loop Returns — exchange-first, bonus credit, the retention-minded choice.
  • ReturnGO — rules-heavy automation with exchanges, store credit and returns analytics.
  • Rich Returns — clean portal, labels and automation at a mid-market price.
  • Return Prime — broad feature set, strong value, good for growing stores.

What Shopify does natively

Shopify supports self-serve returns from the customer account: the shopper requests a return against an order, you approve or decline it in the admin, and you can buy and send a return label in supported markets. Refunds and restocking are handled in the order. There is no exchange flow, no rules engine, no store-credit incentive and no analytics beyond the order list.

For a store with a handful of returns a week and a manual process that works, that is the whole system. The apps earn their money when returns volume makes the manual part expensive, or when the exchange path is worth building.

1. Loop Returns

Loop Returns & Exchanges is built around one idea: make the exchange the obvious path. The portal offers the swap first, lets the customer shop the whole catalogue with their return value plus a bonus credit if they spend more, and only then offers a refund. It handles labels, workflows, rules and reporting, and integrates with the major helpdesks and ESPs.

It is the most expensive on the list and the one that most changes the economics of returns, particularly in apparel, footwear and anything where size is the reason for the return.

2. ReturnGO

ReturnGO is the rules engine: eligibility conditions by product, reason, time window and customer, automatic approvals, exchanges and store credit, multiple refund destinations, and analytics on why things come back. Strong choice for a store with a complicated policy — final-sale lines, different windows by category, region-specific rules.

3. Rich Returns

Rich Returns & Exchanges gives you a branded portal, automated labels, exchange and store-credit options and workflow automation at a lower price point than Loop. A good middle option when you want the portal and the automation without the full retention machinery.

4. Return Prime

Return Prime covers returns, exchanges, refunds to store credit or original payment, label generation with many carriers, and a customisable portal, with pricing that suits growing stores. It is the value pick of the four.

Turning returns into retention

  1. Offer the exchange before the refund. Same size in another colour, the next size up, or a credit worth more than the refund. This is the single change that moves the numbers.
  2. Put the reason codes to work. “Too small” concentrated on one product is a sizing-copy problem on the product page, not a returns problem. Feed the reasons back into the listing.
  3. Wire the portal into your flows. Return received, credit issued, exchange shipped — each is a message in Klaviyo or Attentive, in the same voice as the rest of the programme. See the retention apps comparison.
  4. State the policy where it is read. On the product page near the price, not only in the footer. Contradictions between the policy page, the FAQ and the product page are the most common trust defect we find in audits.
  5. Measure return rate by product and cohort, not as one store-wide number. One bad size chart can carry an entire category’s return rate.

Cross-border returns

International returns are where the apps’ claims thin out: carrier coverage varies by country, duties and taxes on returned goods are handled differently in each market, and a return label that cannot be printed in the customer’s country is not a return process. If you sell through Shopify Markets, check each app’s carrier list and duty handling for your actual markets — that is part of the scope in our international expansion work, and it belongs in the plan before launch rather than after the first overseas return.

If returns are eating margin and you are not sure whether the cause is the policy, the product page or the fulfilment, the free CRO audit reads the whole path and says which one it is.

FAQ

Does Shopify handle returns natively?

Shopify has self-serve returns in the customer account: the customer requests a return, you approve it and can send a label. It does not run exchange-first flows, automated rules, store-credit incentives or returns analytics, which is what the apps add.

Which returns app is best for apparel?

Loop Returns, for the exchange-first flow and bonus-credit mechanics that keep the revenue in the business. Apparel returns are a size problem more than a product problem, so an exchange path that is easier than a refund path is worth more than any refund automation.

How do returns apps affect retention?

A good return experience is a retention event: the customer who exchanges rather than refunds usually buys again. Wire the returns app into your email or SMS tool so the exchange confirmation and the store-credit reminder sit in the same flows as everything else.

Do returns apps work internationally?

Partly. Label generation and carrier coverage vary by market, and duties on cross-border returns are the hard part. If you sell into several markets through Shopify Markets, check each app’s carrier list for the countries that matter before you commit.
