Best Shopify Upsell, Cross-Sell and Bundle Apps in 2026: Raising AOV Without Annoying Anyone

Rebuy, In Cart Upsell, Zipify OCU, AfterSell, Frequently Bought Together and the bundle apps, compared by where they sit in the journey. Plus Functions.

Average order value is the cheapest growth in ecommerce: no extra ad spend, no extra traffic, the same customer spending more in the same session. It is also the easiest place to annoy people. The difference between an upsell that works and one that costs you the order is almost always where it appears, not what it offers.

So this comparison is organised by moment — product page, cart, checkout, post-purchase, and bundles as products in their own right — with what Shopify does natively at each step.

Summary

  • Post-purchase (safest, best return): Zipify One Click Upsell, AfterSell.
  • Cart and cart drawer: Rebuy, In Cart Upsell.
  • Product page recommendations: Frequently Bought Together, Rebuy.
  • Bundles as products: Shopify Bundles (free), Bundler, Simple Bundles.
  • Plus: Shopify Functions for tiered discounts, gifts and cart logic, no app needed.

The moments, in order of safety

  1. Post-purchase. The order is placed; the offer cannot cost you the original sale. Highest safety, strong take rates on a relevant offer.
  2. Checkout (Plus). Native upsell blocks through checkout extensibility — controlled, fast, and not an app script.
  3. Cart. Cross-sells for accessories and consumables, and the free-shipping progress bar that makes the threshold visible.
  4. Product page. Recommendations and “bought together” blocks; useful, but they compete with the add-to-cart for attention.
  5. Pop-up on add-to-cart. The riskiest. Test it properly or leave it alone.

Post-purchase upsells

Zipify One Click Upsell

Zipify OCU builds post-purchase and thank-you-page offers with one-click acceptance (no re-entering payment), funnels with multiple steps, and split testing of the offers. It is the established option for brands that treat post-purchase as a real revenue line.

AfterSell

AfterSell covers post-purchase and thank-you-page upsells plus checkout upsells on Plus, with a lighter setup and clear reporting. For most stores adding post-purchase for the first time, it is the faster route to a working offer.

Cart and cart drawer

Rebuy

Rebuy is the personalisation engine rather than a single-purpose upsell app: recommendations on product pages, a smart cart with upsells and shipping progress, post-purchase offers, and rules a merchandiser can override. It is priced by order volume and it earns that on stores where AOV is the lever — but it is also a substantial script, so measure the cart page with the Store Speed Test before and after.

In Cart Upsell

In Cart Upsell & Cross-Sell does one job at a lower price: targeted offers inside the cart and drawer, with conditions by product, collection or cart value. A good choice when the cart is the only place you want an offer to appear.

Product-page recommendations

Frequently Bought Together puts the familiar bundle block on the product page, with AI recommendations and a discount for taking the set. On stores with genuine accessory relationships — the fence and the extra collar, the lash kit and the adhesive — it works. On a fashion catalogue where everything is loosely related, it mostly fills space.

Shopify’s own product recommendations are free and available in the theme; on a well-built theme they are often enough, and they cost nothing in page weight.

Bundles

Shopify Bundles (free)

Shopify Bundles creates fixed bundles and multipacks natively, with correct inventory tracking on the component products. Start here — it is free, it is Shopify’s own, and it does not add a storefront script.

Bundler

Bundler adds quantity breaks, volume discounts, mix-and-match sets and BOGO mechanics, which is where the free app stops.

Simple Bundles

Simple Bundles & Kits is the one to use when a bundle has to break into its component SKUs for fulfilment — build-your-own boxes, kits picked separately in the warehouse, subscriptions that ship parts. That inventory behaviour is the reason to pay for it.

On Plus, check Functions first

Shopify Functions handles tiered discounts, free gifts at a cart threshold, member pricing and custom cart rules natively on Shopify Plus, enforced in the checkout where an app’s script cannot reach. Every Plus store we audit has at least one app doing a job Functions would do better and faster. The Plus vs Advanced comparison lists what that unlocks.

Five rules for offers that do not cost you the sale

  • One upsell app. Two fighting over the cart drawer is a standard audit finding.
  • Relevance over discount. The accessory that completes the purchase beats 10% off something unrelated.
  • Never interrupt the add-to-cart. If a modal appears between “add” and the cart, measure what it costs before keeping it.
  • Cap the offer count. One in the cart, one post-purchase. Three is a store that feels like a queue of salespeople.
  • Measure revenue per session, not upsell take rate. A take rate can rise while total revenue falls.

If AOV is the goal, the checkout conversion guide and the A/B testing apps comparison cover the measurement side, and our free CRO audit will tell you whether your cart is the place to add an offer or the place to remove three.

FAQ

Do upsell apps actually increase AOV?

Post-purchase upsells and cart cross-sells do, reliably, when the offer is relevant — the customer has already decided to buy and the friction is near zero. Pre-purchase pop-up upsells on the product page as often cost conversion as gain AOV; test those.

What is the difference between a bundle and an upsell?

A bundle is a product: several items sold together at one price, with its own inventory behaviour. An upsell is an offer made at a moment — in the cart, at checkout, or after the order is placed. Shopify Bundles handles the first natively; the upsell apps handle the second.

Does Shopify have bundles built in?

Yes. Shopify Bundles, Shopify’s own free app, creates fixed bundles and multipacks with correct inventory tracking. On Plus, Shopify Functions goes further — tiered discounts, free gifts, custom cart logic — without a third-party app.

How many upsell apps should a store run?

One. Two upsell apps fighting for the cart drawer is a common audit finding: duplicated offers, conflicting scripts and a slower cart. Pick the one that fits where you want the offer to appear and remove the rest.
