Shopify and Wix are both hosted: you pay a monthly plan, and the company runs the servers, the security patches and the checkout. For a store, the differences that matter in 2026 are narrower than the marketing suggests. They come down to which plans can take a payment at all, how many variations one product can hold, what a sale costs you in fees, and how much of the store you can take with you if you leave.
We read each price, limit and fee in this comparison on 3 November 2026, on the two companies’ own pages: Shopify’s US pricing pages and Help Center, and Wix’s plans page and Help Center. Figures are in US dollars. Wix states that its prices and currency vary by location and that the USD prices on its plans page are for reference, so confirm the amount Wix shows at checkout for your country.
Key takeaways
- Wix has four paid plans on yearly billing: Light at $17 a month, Core at $29, Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159. Light cannot accept payments, which makes Core the entry price for a Wix store.
- On a yearly bill, Shopify charges $19 a month for Basic, $49 for Grow and $299 for Advanced; month-to-month billing raises those to $25, $65 and $399. All three can sell from day one, and Shopify Plus is listed from $2,300 per month.
- A Wix product allows 6 options and up to 1,000 variants. A Shopify product allows 3 options and up to 2,048 variants.
- Wix Payments charges US stores 2.9% + $0.30 per online card payment, or 3.7% + $0.30 for American Express. Shopify adds 2%, 1% or 0.6% (Basic, Grow, Advanced) only when you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments.
- Wix exports products and contacts to CSV, but its Help Center says blog posts cannot be exported to another platform and a Wix site cannot be hosted anywhere else.

What it costs to open a store on each
The two price lists look close until you remove the plan that cannot sell. Wix Light, at $17 a month, does not include accepting payments, so a Wix store starts on Core. Every Shopify plan includes checkout, so a Shopify store can start on Basic.
| Store need | Shopify, per year | Wix, per year |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest plan that sells | Basic: $228 | Core: $348 |
| Up to 5 people working in the store | Grow: $588 | Core: $348 |
| Up to 10 people | Advanced: $3,588 (15 staff) | Business: $468 |
These are list prices on yearly billing, before card fees, apps, themes and tax. Wix’s plans page shows yearly prices only and says other billing periods exist, with the final price shown before payment. Shopify publishes both: paying month to month raises Basic to $25, Grow to $65 and Advanced to $399.
Team size changes the answer. Wix counts site collaborators on every plan, including 5 on Core. Shopify Basic includes no extra staff accounts, Grow includes 5 and Advanced 15, although collaborator accounts and staff who only use POS do not count toward Shopify’s limit.
Payment fees
For a US store on Wix Payments, Wix’s fee page lists 2.9% + $0.30 for each online card payment excluding American Express, and 3.7% + $0.30 including it. In-person POS payments cost 2.6% with no fixed fee. A cross-border payment adds 1.5%, a payment in a currency other than the site’s main one adds 1% for conversion, and a chargeback costs $15.
Shopify’s Help Center lists the payments that never carry its third-party fee: Shopify Payments, Shop Pay Installments, manual methods such as cash on delivery or bank transfer, POS orders, and PayPal when Shopify Payments is the main provider. Choose another card gateway and Shopify charges 2% of each order on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, in addition to whatever the gateway charges. Where Shopify Payments is available, that fee stays with Shopify when you refund the order.
Product and catalog limits
Wix Stores accepts up to 50,000 products. Each product can have 6 options, such as color, size and material, with up to 100 choices per option and up to 1,000 variants in total. Shopify allows 3 options per product and up to 2,048 variants.
So Wix lets you describe a product with more attributes, and Shopify lets one product carry more combinations. The difference matters most when you move: Shopify’s guide to migrating from Wix says a Wix product with 4 or more options arrives as a single product with none of its options or variants. Those products have to be rebuilt by hand, usually by merging two options into one or splitting the product into several.
Selling in person
Wix POS works for businesses based in the US, Canada or the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) that are connected to Wix Payments. Wix’s Help Center prices the POS Premium plan at $19 a month for its POS Register and POS Go devices, and each in-person sale syncs to the same dashboard as the online store.
Shopify includes basic in-person selling features with every paid plan. POS Pro adds $89 per month for every location using it, on yearly billing.
What you can take with you if you leave
This is where the two differ most. A Wix site must run on Wix’s servers; the Help Center says it cannot be exported to another host. Product lists export to CSV in files of up to 5,000 rows each, except digital products, which Wix does not export. Up to 50,000 contacts can be exported at once, and only by the site owner. Blog posts cannot be exported to other platforms at all, so a Wix blog moves by copying each post across.
Plan for that before a move, not during it. A store with a large Wix blog should count the posts and decide which ones are worth carrying over, because each one will need a new page and a redirect.
Moving from Wix to Shopify
Shopify’s free Store Migration app takes the product and customer CSV files you export from Wix. Products come in as drafts, Wix collections and ribbons become product tags, and neither file has to be edited before upload. Digital products are added manually, and order history needs an app from another developer. We compare the apps that carry orders in our best Shopify migration tools guide.
Every Wix product address of the form /product-page/slug becomes /products/handle on Shopify, so each one needs a 301 redirect on launch day for the rankings to follow. Our breakdown of Shopify migration cost covers what agencies charge for the move, and our ecommerce development team builds the Shopify store, imports the catalog and maps the redirects.
Where Shopify is the stronger choice
- A lower price to start selling. Basic sells from $19 a month on yearly billing; the first Wix plan that takes payments is $29.
- More combinations per product. 2,048 variants against 1,000 suits apparel and configurable products.
- More stock locations, in writing. Shopify states 10 locations on its standard plans and 200 on Plus.
- A route to enterprise on the same platform. Plus is priced from $2,300 monthly. Our Shopify vs BigCommerce comparison covers the other hosted platform stores weigh at this stage.
Where Wix is the stronger choice
- Cheaper seats for a team. Core includes 5 collaborators for $29 a month; Shopify reaches 5 staff on Grow at $49.
- More attributes per product. Six options per product against Shopify’s three.
- Bookings and a store in one plan. Each Wix plan that sells also lists scheduling and services, which suits businesses selling appointments alongside products.
- A free plan to build on. The site can be built on the free plan before any payment, with a 14-day money-back guarantee on the first upgrade.
Our verdict
Choose Wix if the store is one part of a content or services site, the catalog is small, and a team of several people needs access at the lowest price.
Choose Shopify if selling products is the main job, your products need more than 1,000 variants or will one day, you plan to sell from several stock locations, or you expect to grow into Plus without moving platforms again.
FAQ
Is Wix cheaper than Shopify?
Not for a store’s first plan. Wix Light, at $17 a month, cannot accept payments, so the cheapest Wix plan that sells is Core at $29 a month on yearly billing, against $19 for Shopify Basic. Higher up, Wix Business at $39 costs less than Shopify Grow at $49, and Business Elite at $159 less than Advanced at $299.
Does Wix charge transaction fees?
Wix Payments charges US stores 2.9% + $0.30 per online card payment, or 3.7% + $0.30 for American Express. A cross-border card adds 1.5%, and a payment in a currency other than the site’s main one adds 1% for conversion. Wix’s fee page lists no separate commission on store orders.
What is the variant limit on Wix and on Shopify?
Wix allows up to 6 options per product, 100 choices per option and 1,000 variants in total. Shopify allows up to 3 options and 2,048 variants per product.
Can I move my Wix store to Shopify?
Yes. Shopify’s free Store Migration app imports the product and customer CSV files exported from Wix, and products arrive as drafts. Order history needs a third-party app, digital products are added by hand, and a Wix product with 4 or more options is imported without its variants. Wix does not export blog posts, so those are copied across.
Will I lose my Google rankings moving from Wix to Shopify?
Not if every old address is redirected. Wix product pages sit under /product-page/ by default and Shopify’s under /products/, so each Wix product URL should 301 to the same product on Shopify from launch day.
